What is Kraft paper?

Kraft paper is a packaging material that gets its name from the Kraft pulping process, pioneered by Carl F. Dahl of Germany in the 1880s.

Normally, in the manufacture of paper, wood is ‘pulped’ (ground to a pulp) first, but Dahl found that treating the cellulose pulp with certain chemicals (sulfates) increased the strength of the paper.

What does Kraft mean?

Kraft in German means ‘force’ or ‘strength’

This type of material was eventually used as a packaging material due to its durable and useful nature.

How is it made?

Kraft paper is made by crushing and blending wood pulp material into large rolls of brown filament. These filaments are not color-treated which explains the natural brown color.

Minimal chemical processing makes it 100% biodegradable.

We use Coated Unbleached Kraft for our packaging

There is no ‘bleaching’ or further addition of chemicals other than those patented by the kraft process.

For this reason, it is also called Solid Unbleached Sulfate or SUS and consists of 80% virgin fiber wood/cellulose pulp.

This has great tear-resistance and a high degree of stiffness, all without being thick.

Our business cards are also made from Kraft Paper. 100% biodegradable and recyclable.

What are the advantages of using Kraft paper for packaging?

Kraft paper has excellent strength, and 100% eco-friendly. It decomposes naturally within two to six weeks just like leaves that fall off a tree. It leaves no impact on the environment and can be recycled for other packaging.

Kraft paper also provides an aesthetic and natural look that blends very well with any type of background. It’s non-toxic, stylish, and biodegradable.

How do I recycle Kraft paper packaging?

  • Make sure it’s clean and free from contamination such as food, grease, chemicals, or other noxious compounds.
  • A good tip is to scrunch some paper – if it doesn’t spring back, it can be recycled.
  • Flatten the kraft paper box or break them down to save room in your recycling bin. Make sure the bin is dry and clean.
  • If you’re still not sure what to do, check your local curbside or drop-off program.
  • Call your hauler or city or town hall to learn what is recyclable in your area.
  • If you live in Portugal, please discard them in the Blue Recycle Bin or Azul Ecoponto. Visit this page to find out more.

Bottom line

We’re proud to utilize this material for now and in the future to package all of RT’s products. We desire to make you feel good using eco-products and do the earth a favor at the same time. Small steps and little details can bring such a huge impact. We’ll continue to inspire you to go green and live better.
